Volunteer Overseas Projects – Special Collection 19th/20th July

carahMy name is Carah. I went to St Josephs Primary school and then attended St Pauls High School. Throughout those years, St Joseph’s has been my parish and a big highlight was representing the community at World Youth Day 2008 in Sydney and hosting Canadian pilgrims with whom I still keep in contact. Five years ago, I moved down to Sydney to study Medical Science- but I come back to St Joseph’s whenever I visit the area. This year I’m  completing my final year doing research at Prince of Wales hospital, Sydney.

I’ll be volunteering in two Medicine and Public Health programs overseas from December for 2 months.

Nepal

In Nepal, I’ll be working at a local hospital, observing local medical staff and working in different departments ranging from general health, orthopaedics and surgery. So I’ll be gaining insights into the healthcare system of one of the poorest countries in the world.

Ghana

After Nepal, I’ll be heading to Ghana, West Africa, where the largest ever Ebola virus outbreak is currently spreading. I will be volunteering at a rural community centre, working alongside a local healthcare professional, applying basic medical skills, and performing general health screening, minor wound treatments and screening for different infections like malaria and worms.

In both Nepal and Ghana, I will also be involved in educational campaigns about general health issues such as hygiene and first aid.

So why am I doing these projects?

As we all know, there’s a huge disparity between Australia and countries like Nepal and Ghana where there’s a lack of access to healthcare, and resources and standard practices are very limited. So I grew up wanting to do something medical- and health- related. My studies as a Medical Science Honours student plus years of extracurricular volunteering has made me more interested in increasing the opportunities for people in developing countries to better health access and medical health education.

Raising funds- your support!

I need to raise $5000 to cover both projects fees- I’ll be shouldering the rest of the personal and travel costs. ANY amount contributed would be greatly appreciated. These placements will give me much-needed practical experience and a foundation to build upon. I will also be creating some educational material to give to local children, which will be personalised so as to leave a legacy.
