Soon we will all be invited to vote in a national referendum. It will be about changing the Australian constitution so it recognises the First Peoples of this land. A Government-appointed Expert Panel consulted people around the country and recommended that the constitution be changed to:
- Recognise the prior occupation and continuing cultures, languages and heritage of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Peoples.
- Acknowledge their continuing relationship to lands and waters.
- Remove the ability to bar certain races from voting.
- Remove the capacity to make laws to the detriment of people of any race.
- Protect against discrimination on the basis of race, colour or ethnicity.
