Barry teaching his daughter (7) dot painting at his home in Bateman's Bay, Australia, Sunday, April 7, 2019 Barry was bought up in an environment of alcohol, drugs and domestic violence, but with the help of Red Dust Healing was determined to be a role model for his daughters and his community. He has attended 3 one day workshops as well as the 3 day workshop. Barry is now a trainer and the ‘ripple effect’ that strong male role models like Barry have on a community has seen increased rates of employment, decreased incidence of domestic violence, reduced levels of substance abuse and promoted empowerment amongst aboriginal communities. Barry currently lives in Bateman's Bay and works in the local health district as a welfare officer in the mental health team. Red Dust Healing is a specific cultural healing program written from an Indigenous perspective. It aims to engage Indigenous men, women and families to recognise and confront problems, hurt and anger in their lives, stemming primarily from rejection and grief. © Richard Wainwright / Caritas Australia

Father of four, Barry, embodies resilience and strength.

Growing up in a tough environment, he had to look inside himself to make the right choices for himself and his family. Barry, and others like him, were able to take part in a cultural healing program called Red Dust Healing. This program encourages participants to examine their own personal hurt and allows them to heal from within, addressing family and personal relationships and what may be been life-long patterns of violence, abuse and neglect. Today, thanks to the Caritas support, he’s an inspirational father to his four girls and a leader in his community.
