One Year on from Philippines Typhoon

A year ago one of the biggest storms ever hit the central Philippines – Super Typhoon Haiyan (known also as Yolanda). Four million people lost their homes, six thousand died. Towns were destroyed coconut trees flattened and fishing communities devastated.

Some of us at St Joseph’s know people who were affected. And many of us donated to Caritas, which was helping the typhoon-affected communities recover. In the past year homes have been rebuilt, in safer places, using stronger materials and more typhoon-resilient design. Clean water and sanitation has been a priority. Fishing and farming communities have been helped to re-establish.

Caritas thanks those who contributed generously to the effort.
