“And what I say to you I say to all: Stay awake!” – Mk 13.37
When I was younger, I used to love trying to stay awake on Christmas Eve. Something was happening!
Someone was coming! And I wanted to see. All the excitement and adrenaline keep me awake… for a bit… and then I’d fall asleep.
Yet, I didn’t need anyone to tell me to stay awake (quite the opposite). But I wanted to be awake. I wanted to be ready. I wanted to see who it was that put the presents under the tree!
Today, Jesus invites us to stay awake. We are encouraged to always be on the look out for Jesus’ coming into our lives. We are to be awake to the many possibilities to share the life and love of God with others around us.
Perhaps this Advent we can recall the Christmas joy of a child, and once more we can get excited about staying awake, about being ready, about looking for opportunities to love.
